Hi there, pretty new to this, so please bear with me. My client makes sausages and burgers (so lots of mincing and chopping) and needs to achieve BRCGS START! Clause 4.10.3 Metal detectors and X ray equipment, just double checking it is really necessary for my client to buy an expensive metal detector for the START standard?

Hi Fidelma,

No, metal detection equipment is not mandatory in BRCGS START!

Just to provide some additional context, it was mandatory in issue 1 where clause 4.10.3.1 applied at both basic and intermediate level.
In issue 2, that clause was completely removed and so it is no longer mandatory.

Foreign body detection needs to be driven by your HACCP plan and so it will be necessary to acquire a metal detector if your HACCP plan identifies such controls are needed, or you may be faced with certain customers only taking the product from you if they have gone through a metal detector - however it isn't something that is mandated by the Standard.
